bratislava

Ok, so I haven't been very timely in putting my holiday photos up. We're talking months since I've been back but there were a lot of photos to go through. That's my excuse anyway.

From Vienna we took a day trip to Bratislava, capital city of Slovakia. The powers that be were looking favourably on us because the day we went happened to be Bratislava for Everyone Day. Good timing on our behalf! All the museums and galleries opened their doors for free, there were folk singers and dancers, medieval parades and concerts in the main square. Score!

I really don't know if Bratislava would have been half as exciting without all the festivities!

salzburg: the hills are alive...

I don't think I fully appreciated how photogenic Salzburg was when we were there. Probably because I spent the whole time with the full Sound of Music soundtrack on rotation in my head - it didn't leave much room for any other thoughts. My apologies if random lyrics creep into this post. ('I have confidence in confidence alone...') Of course we had to do a Sound of Music tour - when in Salzburg right? We saw the back of the Von Trapp family house, the front of the house - which is a totally different house, the gazebo ('I am sixteen going on seventeen') and the church where Maria and Captain Von Trapp got married. I didn't get to run around in the grass singing 'the hills are alive..' but that was probably best for everyone around me. We also didn't cut up the curtains and make matching outfits.

The street signs on this main shopping street were so beautifully crafted. Even the McDonalds had a fancy sign, although I couldn't get a great photo of it.

innsbruck

For our second stop of the trip we crossed the border from Germany over to Austria into Innsbruck. This place was so lovely. Snow covered mountains surround this quaint little city in all its Austrian glory. We were lucky enough to have got up to the snow while we were there in April because they had been having a late winter, but it was beautiful spring sunny weather - bonus! We headed up the mountain, everyone else with their snow boots on, me with my ver non-waterproof canvas Toms on. I didn't really look the part, but I enjoyed myself anyway. I just had to tip-toe around and try not to fall over. Easy.

Next stop Salzburg... home of the Sound of Music

first stop: munich

First stop on our trip was Munich for Friday afternoon and the next morning. We were a little jet-lagged but we managed to take in the sites. I didn't get any photos of them but there were endless stalls selling the reddest and freshest looking strawberries and raspberries you've ever seen - for one euro a punnet! And in the space of two blocks there were at least five H&Ms. I was in heaven!

I love Europe with all the copper domes and statues. And Germany was totally impressing me with their awesome typography - there was Futura everywhere which is my favourite font.  And then there was a giant red apple.
